Projects - 3
networkMaryland
Project Overview: The Task Force
on High Speed Network Development, developed by the
state in 1998, requested the creation of networkMaryland.
The task force asked for a high-speed network that would
have equal services offered to all areas of the state.
networkMaryland uses fiber optic cables to provide affordable
high-speed bandwidth. The program provides Internet,
statewide government intranet, and inter-LATA transport
services. The statewide intranet allows government agencies
to create and share resources. Inter-LATA transport
services means that networkMaryland can provide services
similar to a long-distance phone carrier.
So far agencies in Baltimore, Annapolis, and College
Park areas are connected. Expansion to the eastern shore
of the state is currently in process. networkMaryland
monitors the system 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Not only are services offered to state agencies, but
networkMaryland benefits are also offered to local governments,
public schools, libraries, hospitals, and higher education.
Once the program is fully operational, the state will
benefit by having a single managed communication infrastructure,
reduced cost for Internet and LATA connection, and the
network will also make Maryland more competitive with
other state governments.
CenGen Inc provides support to Computer Science Corporation
the Prime contractor on the effort.
